Fellows will be introduced to microbes, using the Giant Microbes as a visual.The relationship between microorganisms and disease will be discussed (Part 1).
Explore
Fellows will touch bacteria plates before and after cleaning their hands with either antibiotic soap or a sanitizing hand wash.These plates will be allowed to grow over the next several days, and fellows will be able to explore the microbes found on their hands.Fellows will also be given swabs that they can use to explore the microbes found on objects in the classroom (e.g. phone, doorknob, purses, desks, chair, garbage can, etc.) (Part 1).
Explain
Fellows will discuss the effectiveness of antibiotic handwashes and talk about why it is important to wash their hands regularly.They will relate the microbes in their environment to the diseases that they have discussed.The spread of disease and the domination of microbes in or environment will also be discussed (Part 1).
Elaborate ·GloGerm hand cream will be used to enable fellows to see how well (or how poorly) they wash their hands (Part 1).
·At a later date, fellows will make and record observations regarding their bacterial plates. They will compare the bacteria transferred from their hands before and after the use of antimicrobial washes and determine which objects in the classroom environment had high levels of microbes as indicated by the growth on the agar plates (Part 2).
